Cham folk songs - Intangible cultural heritage that needs to be preserved and promoted

The Cham are an ethnic group in the Vietnamese ethnic community. They have a very rich and diverse culture, including folk songs. Folk songs are a type of musical and performing heritage typical of the Cham people's folk cultural treasure. Cham folk songs include a system of songs with meaningful lyrics containing many contents about love, the beauty of nature, the countryside, and traditional labor and production activities. The melodies of folk songs are always deep, soulful, filled with emotions and love of couples in love... Cham folk songs are alive through each generation, are the "mother's milk" that nourishes the Cham people through many periods, and are typical popular musical cultural values of the Cham people from the past to the present.

In the past, the Cham people had many folk songs of many genres, many ancient Cham people grew up singing folk songs, so everyone knew or knew folk songs. But like many other cultural heritages in the context of integration, before the penetration of modern music forms, Cham folk songs are also at risk of being lost. Nowadays, the number of Cham people who can sing their traditional folk songs is very small, most of those who know folk songs are old, some have passed away over time. Young people (especially students) almost no one knows or cares about Cham folk songs anymore. That is a sign of the disappearance of folk songs in just a few decades.

The work of preserving and promoting Cham folk heritage in particular and the intangible culture of the Cham people in general is facing many difficulties and challenges. It requires investment from all levels, sectors, and cultural heritage conservation organizations at home and abroad... Only then can Cham folk heritage be preserved and promoted, becoming a "link" connecting generations, from which Cham folk music lives forever with cultural heritage and creates a ripple effect to the entire Cham community.
